Born and raised on a farm in Kentucky, Sue Thomas Hegyvary grew up with the sights, sounds, and smells of the woods. While pursuing a highly successful career in nursing and global health, she, her husband, and two children moved to the Pacific Northwest. Their favorite retreat was their cabin in the woods on the sunny and dry east slopes of the Cascade Mountains. Amidst such beauty that they assumed would last forever, they became intrigued with questions about sustaining the natural environment and immersed in issues and debates about managing forests. Facing the declining health of the family forest and increasing threat of fire, they had to question their assumptions, learn new skills, and watch in horror as fires swept the state and region.
The poems in this collection are set at their cabin in the woods and in the Okanogan Highlands of Eastern Washington.
